I am reviewing some very nice and very expensive SET Mono blocks. They have 12au7 type tubes for the front end. These tubes have a great impact on the sound of these amps. They game with some Jan Philips and I think the amp sounds great this way, very alive, very transparent, and very dynamic. The importer sent along two other sets of 12au7 types, both from Siemens, one was in cute little ten cans and made in the early 70s. The other set was from the 80s. Either set of Siemens have a little better bass, tighter and more defined, but overall are not nearly as dynamic or open sounding as the Jan Philips.
Here's my question. Is there a set I should try that would give me the tighter, better defined bass and be as open and dynamic as the Jan Philips?
