Choosing between ECC88, E88CC, and E188CC

John,

It is interesting that these ECC88 / 6DJ8s were packaged as E188CC / 7308s. Of course, any military has probably hundreds of thousands if not millions of parts to keep track of.

In my view, the Amperex ECC88 may well be the best sounding ordinary version of this family. Because of the stress put on them, I have to use the E188CC or Sovtek/EH 6922 for my main use- Audio Research SP10, but I'm convinced the ECC88 typical has a richer, more dynamic sound- they seem "freer"- slightly less constrained. The E188CC now is priced in the silly range, just as being the highest specification member of the 6DJ8 family, but if I could, I'd use Bugle Boy ECC88 and Amperex A-frame everywhere I could for sonic reasons. The Siemens E88CC is a great one in the 6922 world.

The 6DJ8 family ratings:

ECC88 = 6DJ8 130V/1,8W

E88CC= 6922 220V/1,8W

E188CC= 7308 250V/2W

6N23P/ Sovtek 6922 300V/1,8W

6N23P-EV/ EH 6922 300V/2W

- Note the 7308 is rated for almost twice the voltage to the 6DJ8.

You don't mention the preamp you're using, and generically, 6DJ8s by rating will last less time than 7308s, but I still recommend looking into the degree of stress and dealer recommendation for type. There are several preamps- the Audible Illusions for example where the higher rating is necessary.

Let us know how they work!

Cheers,

Bambi B
