Re: New to tubes. Where should I begin?

I made the rookie mistake of buying the Scott 299A as my first tube purchase. It's a really nice piece and mates well with the Heresy 1's (which I also happen to own). The problem is that the Scott is a comparatively difficult piece to work on if you plan to recap it yourself....the chassis is very crammed and there are a whole lot of components that need replacing (see the recent slew of articles by Charles Hansen in AudioXpress for tips on what to replace- although he goes a bit overboard). The nice thing about the Scotts is that the aluminum chassis doesn't corrode so they shine up well and have a really nice look to them if you want to use them without a case. If you plan to send it out to someone else then by all means go for it. Still, my Scott needs a lot of fiddling (those stupid slide switches and pots require a lot of constant cleaning unless you use it often and work them in a lot, just like a vintage camera shutter). At least when you buy new you don't have to mess around with pots and switches as much....

If you really want to get some different "bandwidth" I would suggest going with something SETish. My Heresy's are connected to a homebrew amp running 2A3 tubes and I really like the sound of that combo very much.

Either way you choose, there are wonderful options so you are very likely to be dissapointed...and all of this stuff is easy to resell if you change your mind.

Good luck!
