Actually, its not so much risk to the tester with a solid state replacement..it has to do with the voltage drop or sag of the vacuum tube rectifier being greater than the solid state counterpart. In this way your voltages are way off(higher) so that alignment of the tester is off too. If you know what you're doing you can compensate for this. Unfortunately,with Hickok's compensating is not always possible for other reasons too complex to get into here.
