For a tube tester, I don't see why you wouldn't want to go solid state. Sonics aren't an issue, reliability is. A pair of diodes in series with resistors should model the tube's performance well, and the 0.7V crossover glitch just shouldn't matter. But then, a lot of times something I don't know bites me. Whatever it is, I can't imagine it would damage the tester.
