jbucla2005,I've never tried the Mullard CV4004, but I was so impressed with the triple mica, black plate, square getter Sylvania 5751, I ended up buying a big pile- more than any other model 12AX7. These are identical to the Gold Brand, but are military issue with steel pins.
These are not useful everywhere, it was not a good match for the Audio Research SP8 phono- as I like a punchy, faster higher gain tube there (Siemens E83CC), but fantastic in the line stage and great in the McIntosh MX110. I think some of these will find their way into my Fisher 800 receiver- if the 8- original 1964 Telefunken smooth plate 12AX7s ever give up!
Those old 3 -mica Sylvania 5751s are just marvelous- the sound is just fantastically refined- detailed and clean, but deep- and quiet. I never had any consciousness of the somewhat lower gain. I tried the RCA and later GE 5751s and found the later grey plate GE to be really good tubes for bass.
In my microphone preamp I'm using 4-Sylvania 3-mica 5751s with 2- GE grey plate 5751and the 2-12AT7s are Philips Hamburg gold pin 6201s. The sound is excellent.
The 5751 must have been truly discovered by the guitar amp crowd- three years ago I used to buy 5751s NOS for $12-14 while the GE/Sylvania grey plates were always $10- even at TubeWorld and then the 5751 was about half of the corresponding quality 12AX7 price. Now the 5751 seems to be unecessarily expensive.
Cheers,
