Re: The old tube amp question again

Hi,

I've seen many of your posts over the last months. I see that you were going through alot of experimentation with some old solid state stuff and more recently with your 6V6 project.

I may get flamed... but consider all the time that you have spent trying to search for that holy grail on the cheap..I know I have tried and failed. Think about ,if at all possible, doubling your budget and getting a Marantz 8b or MacIntosh 225. You will not be dissapointed. Your will have a classic that will retain or rise in value. A piece constructed to very high standards that will keep on looking and sounding good. I have had many of the amps suggested through my system..the 8b and 225 stand out. Do some research on the forum under these two models...you will see consistant praise..for good reason.

If you can borrow a different pre; try to. The C-26 is really long in the tooth I had one for years and it was totally restored its inherent noise level is ungodly in modern terms. I don't mean hiss I mean phasy distortion. Mac's later SS efforts are much quieter and less distorting. I have the Citation II, Dyna MkIII& Stereo70, and the 225 & 8b.... really no contest.

Now if your just doing this for fun inorder to flip into another amp 6mos down the road, ignore what I said. If you want to get off the treadmill see if you can wait some ,save up, or sell something to get to another plateau. Remember the Dyna stuff was made to a price point...good value but really not in the league of what I'm suggesting. For fun look up "Joe Rosen" on the tubes asylum.. Take what he writes with a grain of salt.. but I know him and he's very talented and has a great ear..he's not half as caustic in person as he is in print. But he gives good advice on the models I've suggested and makes for fun reading in your research.

Good Luck on your search!
