The tube is hook thru the transformer to the cathode and if you wire the beam plate to the cathode you just down the tube totally from conducting..
THis is just something I wanted to try and it sounds very good..Its no secret that I dont like el34s and for me to say that it sounds this good has to be reason..I was very impressed..Im not sure its as good as the 6550s but I have only use them on the AR3s with an extended piezo on top..THe real test will be on the martin logans.
