Like any tube using different materials & having minor mechanical differences, it should produce a different sonic response in an audio amplifier. The 5AR4A is rated the same as a 5U4GB with regard to current output & PIV.

We have even heard slight differences in same manufacture tubes that appear to have same construction inside. but from having date codes about 8 years apart from one another.

I usually prefer a neutral sounding rectifier tube that does not add color to the sonics.

I have not any precise idea why tubes of simular appearence & construction sound different from one another or the same tube different in various circuits.

I would only guess the different sonics of same tubes in different audio circuits is due to the level of various harmonics produced (or the fundentmental noise suppression characteristics in the case of a rectifier) causing IMD products mixing with the original music source. As small as these IMD products may be, the ear at an astounding 140dB dynamic range can hear it. Add another ear and it becomes even more complex.
