I wouldn't be surprised if Berning didn't make his parts choices to suit the tubes he used. I remember reading years ago in Sounds Like .... magazine that someone tried changing the parts in his EA-230 amp for "better" parts and wound up changing them back because the stock parts sounded better. Changing to a different tube may change the sound but may not improve the sound.
