Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: RCA "cleartop" , Brimar "cleartop"

No elongated octagon on these tubes. Strictly Amperex markings. The 7-35 date codes are also Amperex orange ink. Probably applied by Amperex after they sourced them from RCA. I think you are right. The rectagular getter is probably an older version. So, knowing a little bit about manufacturing, its possible one is older than the other but somehow got into the same "batch" at Amperex's facility.

I like your short list of favorites. I'm having some fun rolling these in my Bottlehead FP-III preamp:

Amperex 12AU7 orange globe 1969 Heerlen, Holland. Nice all around, good bass, silky smooth midrange, smooth highs, very slight loss of detail.

RCA Clear Tops. Good bass maybe a tad better defined than the Amperex above, Lots of detail, I'll say sweet mids but words starting with S or F sound somewhat electronic, smooth highs but not as smooth as the Amperex. Overall, a good but bright sounding tube just like many have said.

Raytheon 5814 black plate, triple mica 1954. Have displaced above Amperex as the favorite in my system. More or less falls right in between the above two. Only problem is that these are rare so I'm not likely to find another pair or two for my stash.

Will try some Siemens ECC82 soon.

Thanks for you insight.
