Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Important experience

kentaja,

Dependably sensible!

Yours is important information in this discussion- I have never compared a "generic" Alps pot to an ARC one, but I fully believe ARC would have their own specification. And your experience with the aftermarket pots confirms my nervousness in making substitutions- unless you can have the original and replacement in hand and they are identical in every way.

I would note too that ARC aren't afraid to change their specification- the D130 power switch I received -the only part besides tubes I've ever changed myself on ARC stuff- had a different shape button and surround and the pins were slightly different in placement. "ARC" notes that ARC now supplies a different pot for the SP8 than the Alps.

It may be the D130 switch was a common failure- it was after all a "budget" amplifier for the poor and hard of hearing at only $2000- and ARC came up with a stouter switch. I'm wondering if this principle applies to the changed specification for the SP8 pot- or are there simply none of the original, proprietary ones left? -Complicated!

Now, I would more strongly advise our friend to caution.

Cheers,

Bambi B
