First off, I'd avoid the Gold Elite tubes. They have an even higher problem rate than the regular ones, plus sometimes the pin plating makes the pin so thick it won't fit in the socket! More money - poorer quality. Not a good deal! For a Jolida he doesn't need balanced sections, he doesn't need matched tubes, but I test all my tubes for microphonics and noise and I think that is very worthwhile. Some types like the Ei are VERY prone to microphonics and noise - others like the LPS Sovtek and a few others are quite good in this area. I only reject about 1 of a hundred LPS for noise or microphonics - the Ei reject rate is 25% or more usually.
To introduce him to tube rolling try some lower cost tubes first so he can get a feel for what it's all about as far as affecting tone. I love NOS and excellent used old stock, but I'd recommend he try a reissue Tung-Sol 12AX7 before he spends double, triple, or quadruple that on old stock. It's a fine tube, and it definitely rocks!!
