Thanks for your help. You were absolutely right, both the A42 and the MJE340 went out together.I replaced them both, but for the MJE340 I substituted a TIP47. I will probably have to get a TIP 50, I'm running the TIP47 a little close to the Vce limit, especially when I push the power button on. :)
The filament voltage is now a nice and steady 324V now.
