Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Newbie! How much difference can tubes make?

A humble suggestion or two...

First, don't spend a ton of money on exotic tubes. I've always said that if you make a mistake and don't like a $15 tube it's not so bad. But a mistake on a $100 tube is a killer. You can find better tubes than you currently have that will be much more musical for a relatively small investment.

Second, don't look at the tubes individually. A balance between tubes is the key. If you put all "great" tubes in, but they all have a warm soft character you pre will sound rolled off, you'll lose the energy you have now. All "hot" tubes can make your high frequencies into audio death-beams, so that won't work well either.

There are some superb current production tubes you can use that will make a big difference in the tone quality and musicality without a big outlay. If you want to get real specific drop me a note off-forum.

In any case, WELCOME!
