You should be able to get it working on the cheap. The major expense would be in replacing capacitors, tubes. Pergaps the whole project could be done at the $100 mark.I might be willing to pull my suitcase out of the closet and guide you through in return for those "$.99 plastic radio speakers." You will need some bsic soldering skills...
