Re: classic 60 tubes

Kelly,

The Classic 60 is a wonderful amp, one of my favorite ARC designs. My suggestion is to go back to 6550 tubes like it had originally. There are a number of good 6550 choices today. The SED winged "C" are a really nice choice. I am also very impressed with the new TungSol 6550 tubes but I have not tried them in a Classic 60. I just replaced the tubes in my VT100 MK3 with the new TungSol 6550s and I really like them. I use to own a Classic 60 when they first came out and I now own a V70 which is basically a MK2 version of the Classic 60. It originally came with KT90 tubes but I have used 6550 tubes for a number of years now. I currently have SED winged "C" 6550 tubes in it.

As for what would need to be done. There are 4 resistors that may need to be replaced. The reason is so that you can bias the tubes properly, the trim pot may now be out of range with 6550 tubes. If you call ARC and talk to Leonard he can help. When I did this to my V70 he sent me a schematic with the resistors highlighted in yellow along with the resistors. Have your serial number handy in case he needs it. I think there are 2 versions of the Classic 60. The earlier version and a later version that is similar to the V70. Tom
