First thought is Dynaco and Eico, maybe Scott

It's hard to go wrong with the Dynaco Stereo 70 if you can find one that hasn't been abused. If you watch Audigon, you can usually find one that's been well taken care of in your price range. I have one that I totally rebuild using Ron Welborne's kit. It's no longer a Dynaco, but it's really wonderful now, and much more reliable than stock.

The Eico Stereo 70 has better output iron than the Dynaco, and is less rolled-off on the high end. Harder to find, but worth it. Check out the Dynaco group on Yahoo groups for info.

If you can get past the EL34, you might look at some EL84-based amps. The small-tube amps can make magic and are surprisingly powerful. That opens the door to some Scott Integrateds, especially the 299c. I own an Eico HF-81 which many consider one of the sweetest, best-sounding integrated amps ever made. It does a nice job with reasonably efficient dynamic speakers, despite only having 14 watts per channel.

On a good day you should be able to find any of these under $500, but it seems like the good ones tend to go for more too, so it pays to be patient and wait for the right amp. If you do, you'll never go back to solid state!
