I think that your hypothisis about the true nature of Phish's "First Tube" may be correct. If you listen to their studio album "Farmhouse" the track that comes right before "Tube", "Sand" has some sound fx that sound strangley similar to the type o tubes you are talking about. ;)
Phish actually has another song titled simply "Tube" That also rocks but is not on any of their studio albums. I think that tube is refering to a test tube in a laboratory.
In any event Phish was a great live act and a good studio band. I would suggest that anybody interested in them pick up some old bootlegs or any of their live releases to get a taste of what Phish was really like.

PS I have found that tubes make my old DAT tapes I recorded at Phish shows sound much better. And of course I am talking about the vacuum type tubes, but the other kind doesn't hurt...
