Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

The Primaluna don't come with a phono stage......

although they do have an add on MM stage (at least the Three does - don't know about the One and Two). I have an MC cartridge so that won't work for me.

Regarding your other questions - the One is basically an amp with a passive line stage. It has no provision for driving an external amp.
I have been driving the Five with the Three and my SP10. In some ways I prefer the Three, it's certainly quieter, and tonally more adaptable to tube changes - the SP10's tube demands limits your selection to a few very rugged tube types.

I think you could well enjoy using the Three with your present amp but I will always opt for a tube pre-amp over a SS one - they are just generally tonally more rich than SS. While I prefer tube amps they can be a hassle and the difference is not as great, depending on your room, speakers, and expectations. The one problem which could raise its head with the Three is its output impedence - its on the high side and you would want to make sure it matches your amps imput impedence.

As to using the MF as a pre with the Five as an amp, I don't know.....If I was forced to make a choice, based on my experience so far with the One, I would go for the Four.

But all of this is moot if you don't have an add on phono stage or a MM cartridge and are willing to go with PL's add on board. Of course you could always take the phone stage out from your MF via its tape out (assuming it has one).

Hope that helps a bit.
