Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Depends on what you're interested in.....

the last one is RC-30, issued in 1975, has coverage of tubes such as 7199, 7868, 7591 such as are used in Dyna Stereo 70, various Fisher and other integrated amps, as well as Compactrons, standard 7-pin and 9 pin miniatures such as the 12A_7 series, octal tubes such as 6SL7 and 6SN7, power tubes like 6CA7 (EL34), etc. etc. Also a section of circuits in the back like a nifty inexpensive phono preamp with passive RIAA equalization.

On the other hand, it has less info on earlier tubes and almost none on pre-WWII triode tubes such as the 56, 76, 2A3, etc.

RC-19, which has been reprinted, has plate curves for the 6SL7, for example, which RC 30 doesn't have, and has many of the same circuits as RC-30 in the back, but just has the circuits without any accompanying written descriptions. Also does not have the later tubes such as 7199, 7189, because it was published in 1959 before those tubes came out.

RC-14, also a reprint, was published in 1940, so has much more info on pre-WWII tubes, including, for example, plate curves for the 2A3 which the other manuals do not, since by the time RC-19 came out the 2A3 was obsolete.

Those three are probably the easiest to find because RC-14 and RC-19 have been reprinted, and RC-30 is the most recent so there are still used examples around from time to time.
