Here is what I can figure out for my venture into a DIY KT88 type PP amp with reading the archives regarding new manufacture tubes.I believe the issue of 'what is best' of new manufacture tubes (not including the undisputed EI KT90) is for the most part the tube that compliments the amplifier individual sonics & speakers. My less than perfect conclusion is as follows:
#1- Undisputed Best- Most Expensive
EI KT90 type 1 or II (supplier is J. McShane)#2- Excellent & Low Cost- Perhaps the best Bargain Priced Tube
Russian Wing 'C' 6550#3- Good Tube
Electro Harmonic KT88 as a low cost alternate that J. McShane can live with in a Citation II amp.#4- Another Good Tube
Valve Art KT88 that does not seen to have near the following of the EH KT88.Be forewarned, I have zero background on the 6550/KT88 tetrode based amps. If I had owned half a dozen and rolled plenty of tubes plus upgraded components, I could come to a conclusion of a tube that consistantly outperformes the rest. I believe J. McShane has done that.
