The premier four was not especially well-reviewed back then compared to other c-j amps like the premier one, though it seems to have grown in its reputation over time. It was then not considered sonically competitive with some of c-j's other amps.I'd say it's roughly the equal of the modern c-j amps, though my premier 12's are a bit more robust. (They're also a good deal more expensive, of course.) I briefly had a c-j MV-75A, considered a lesser amp than the four (as was the whole MV series), and it was extremely well-built.
Conrad-Johnson is a serious high-end company. All of its products are good-sounding and well-built, to put it concisely.
