Huh-- The RCA 6L6GC blackplate, oddly enough, is one of the few American power tubes I have never really liked. Back in the 1980s I tried them in a number of 6L6 amps that I had (and sadly sold well before the huge increase in tube amp values). The RCA 6L6GC just never did it for me--- sounding a bit loose and over emphasized in the mids and not enough top end, even the very earliest production from the first 2-3 years of 6l6GC production by RCA. Well-- to each his own. The RCA worked best in my buddy's Mac 30s, and didn't sound good at all in the Citation V, or Quad IIs. (I sold the Quad IIs for $175 if you can believe it! Ouch!)I like the Saratov/Groove black base KT66HP all right, but I favor the Chinese version GEC copy KT66 or the SED/Svetlana 6L6GC. In the style of a VTV "shootout" some friends and I, using a pair of Heath W-5s belonging to asylum inmate "A#1", found the Svetlana 6L6GCs bested many NOS and all the modern 6L6 types except the Chinese KT66. Only the Genelex Kt66s and early GE 7581s were better. But, I'm sure to other ears and in other gear totally different conclusions could be reached.
