Re: RCA JRC-5751

Which 5751s to look out for? Joe's Tube Lore is fun to read and informative. Certainly give it a read - and with a little grain of salt.

There's more than one RCA JRC-5751. The JRC prefix indicates the tube was made under a military contract. But there're at least three RCA-made 5751 variants: two 3-mica types (one with a smooth top mica spacer, one with a serrated mica spacer), and one 2-mica type (the Command/Command-style; save some money and don't buy the Command-branded tubes). All have black plates. To my ears in my systems all these RCAs, while a nice enough sounding tube, tend to sound a little soft for my preference.

The black plate 3 micas GEs are excellent (again, a couple construction variants here, but all good). The gray plate 3 micas are okay. In the sixties GE made the 5751 in a two mica gray plate form with support posts. The last GE production 5751s, most often seen as the green print JAN marked tubes, are a bit rough around the edges. Conrad Johnson used these forever as their house/OE 5751. So whoever liked the stock CJ sound had to have like the sound of this tube at least a little bit.

The Raytheon 5751, and again there're a couple different ones, though I'm not exactly sure who really made some of them; some may be made by RCA or GE? But the "windmill" getter tube is very nice and unique enough to be ID'ed postively. But any black plate 3 mica 5751 is likely to sound pretty good.

The Sylvanias are my favorite, most particularly the gray plate triple mica with the o-getters. If you want to save some money don't buy the gold-pinned ones, though they all seem to be going up in price. Again, all the same tube just with different branding treatments. The black plates are also excellent and seem to the be most sought after, and expensive, 5751s today. The last of the Sylvania 5751s, two mica gray plate, branded as Sylvania, ECG, Philips, etc., seem to have met the same fate as the last of the GEs.

One that's a bit rare, or at least I haven't seen many, are the Siemens 5751. Three mica gray plates. Nicely made tube, highly resolving. Very good tube.
