Hi Russ!Well, it's not a tube problem per se, but it can be a "compatibility" problem. It's an easy one to solve if the unit is being reworked, but it's not easy if you don't want to change a few parts. Like the larger bottle too - the EH isn't a 100% drop in for every 7591A application. The JJ may be - but JJ scares me since the 5AR4 miswiring (I had to dump 80% of my stock, and eat the cost) and the high reject rates on the ECC83S came to the fore. So I'll wait a bit and see...
But the issues with burn-in and matching are easily solvable. Somebody has to do it right, and a lot of vendors depend on the importer/distributor to match them. That's risky in my experience. I often buy "distributor matched" tubes since they are likely to be closer than just buying tubes at random from them. But I re-match the tubes myself every time. I have found that a distributor matched octet will often not even yield a quad I would call matched! If I didn't catch those, the consumer would - with predictable results.
My whole point is the tube itself is fine - don't swear off EH tubes like the one poster did. Number one, they are the only source of many numbers; and number two, right now I can tell you EH/Sovtek stuff has fewer rejects or returns than any other brand I handle.
I just wanted to contribute some perspective and remind folks of what I found on the grid resistor thing.
