Re: To Chris Spafford, Gary Kaufmann & others : Question on MC60/Solen caps

I'm in the same situation regarding old/new versions. I plan to rebuild the newer one using the signal path circuit of the older one. Among other things, the older one uses 1/2 of the input 12AX7 as a true voltage regulator for the input stage. An NE2 neon lamp is used as the voltage reference. The newer circuit uses a simple resistor voltage divider as the "reference"...not really a reference. However, I'm going to rebuild the power supply using the newer choke circuit. In the interests of physical "authenticity" I'm going to have to wind my own since I've never found a commercial part with both the physical dimensions and the proper electical properties. Interestingly, the older chassis is punched for the choke so they must have seen it coming.

As for solen caps, I've used them (although not in signal path of Mac amps) and they sound OK to me. I like the sound of 716 Orange Drops maybe a little better. The IC metalized PP are good too. I've used solens in PS applications w/o issue and recommend them for things like Mac bias supply (where I HAVE used them). Some will claim that solens sound "fizzy" and not so good. To my ears the differences are subtle at best so experimentation is probably the order of the day. Always use whatever sounds best to you since most will never see the underside of your Macs.
