Re: 6sn7 matching

Matching means many things to different people. In power tubes, matching should involve plate current curves (this requires expensive and hard to find testing gear). With small signal tubes like 6SN7s, people generally match for gm only. A matched tube could mean all four sections of a pair are matched, or section 1 of tube 1 is matched with section 1 of tube 2 and so on. Some people consider tubes of the same vintage and/or production plants "matched" pairs. Again, the term matching is open to interpretion. I wouldn't lose sleep over matching 6SN7s. IMO, it's not critical to match small signal tubes. Still ..... getting tubes of simliar gm values increases the chance these tubes are operating at roughly the same period in their lifespan, and matching vintage/production plants decreases the likelihood of mismatched sonics due to different materials or manufacturing processes used.
