Help - Distortion from a Bogen Challenger

I just acquired a Bogen Challenger Mono Tube Amp, It seems in excellent condition ( near mint ) but i am really a newbie in with vintage Tube Amp... So first i dont even know how to connect speakers properly... ( i know that i must connect one wire on *C* and the other on the impedance number of my speakers. I manage to have some sound from the speaker... but as soon as i set the volume near an adequate really moderate level the bass and mids begins to distortion really bad...

Could you point me what i am doing wrong or if that means the tubes are almost dead?

the connectors on the rear are the following:

- G - C - 4 - 8 - 16 - 25V - and there is this black cable that comes out of the amp that have to go where exactly?

I guess it sounds funny for you? but I AM really lost ;)

Thanks for your help!

JF
