Just got several smooth plate telefunkens for a Luxman tubed crossover. The tele's sound very clean and neutral, maybe a little light for the lovers of bass and lower midrange. A real sleeper are the five star GE 5963's, very, very nice sounding and well balanced, that I wound up using in most of the circuits of the crossover instead of the tele's.
Nobody's caught on to the five stars, so you may find them for cheap. what a bargain since they cost less than a fourth of what the tele's cost, and overall I think they sound better. Their only restriction is the voltage rating is 250V rather than 330 for standard 12au7.
