If it's the standard formula then you'll find two 6BM8 per channel in the power section. Pentodes in push-pull and triodes for voltage gain and phase splitting. It can produce decent sound, but only if you replace those awful coupling caps!
The Japanese 6BM8's are not too bad. The preamp section most likely uses a 12AX7, and you'll do well to replace them with newer tubes.
No miracles in the end, just clean 12 watts or so per channel. You still need efficient speakers and you'll never shake walls, but you'll have a better sound than any cheap receiver you can buy today.
From all the Japanese companies, Kenwood ranks with the best. They don't make airplanes like Mitsubishi and no "lowest price" gear. Their business is split between consumer and commercial electronics, and the quality usually shows.
For $40 that receiver is a decent deal.
