My Top Four: "musically" favorite hardware

66.74.72.231

tube lubba,

Three picks:

1. Audio Research SP10 preamplifier. The two-chassis all-tube sound form the SP10 is just wonderful- it is the magic phono preamp. For phono, I don't think there is a match anywhere for palpable 3-D imaging and dynamics. A time machine and transportation device- close your eyes and you're sitting right next to Rubenstein! If you don't like the SP10 sound for phono, there is some OTHER component in the chain that's not up to it's mark!

2. Audio Research M100. It happens the all tube (6550) M100 monoblocks are contemporary to the SP10 and the M100 is similarly astounding.

3. Amperex "Bugle Boy" ECC83 /12AX7. These have been wonderful everywhere I've tried them- magic AND versatile. I leike the Siemens E83CC very much, but those have a particular character that is not usuable evceryhwere while BBs seem almost perfect in every kind of gear. I wish I had two dozen!

4.- Because I never follow rules- Steinway Hamburg "C" (7'4"). For pianos, this is my favourite musical hardware. The Hamburg "C" is just perfect- the sound, the action, everything. I'm sorry that NOS Amperex Bugle Boys are $90 and I'm similary sorry that Hamburg "C"s are $90,000!

Honourable mentions: Soundlab A-3s, SME V tonearm, Marantz 10B, Sylvania triple mica, square getter, gold print 5751, Schoeps CMC6

Cheers,

Bambi B
