Re: HP branded Amperex 6DJ8/ ECC88 tubes - Help!

Bibi,

I have about 30 Aperex A-frame ECC88 / 6DJ8s, though only a few with the disc getter. Several are just like yours- "HP" issue. I like instrumentation tubes a lot- and the HP were often for medical equipment as well as other test gear, oscilloscopes, etc. You'll see "Textronix" tubes similarly. I have a set of 4 Textronix 12AU7's (RCA cleartop) and all 8 triode sections are perhaps within 4 or 5%. That's the nice thing about HP tubes too- they are selected and always quiet, low microphonics, and balanced sections. There are many, many tube types rebranded HP- I have some HP Amperex ECC82/ 12AU7 and an HP 12AT7 is an RCA.

You can easily tell the date and place of manufacture of any Philips made tube by the tiny code etched on the glass. this will something like: I65 3 "delta sign" 4. The numbers are: type/revision number/month/factory (the delta stands for Heerlen, Holland Plant, B= Mullard, Blackburn/ year. If you think yours are 70's then the 4 in the exemple would be 1974. If you had a "Bugle Boy" ECC88, the 4 would mean 1964. I may not have this exactly right, but there are sites where you can get the keys to the Philips codes.

As for desirabiity, true, these Amperex ECC88 are later, but I happen to like the sound as much as any ECC88. I haven't made too much comparison to the Bugle Boy, but frankly, I find the A-Frame is one of the best. And having them seected for HP means they are probably above average in every parameter.

For a comparison of ECC88 models, including the A-frame Amperex, see "Joe's Tube Lore" in the FAW section of this site.

Cheers,

Bambi B
