Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Pearl tube-cooler problems?

That could be, but the design of this amp (Berning Siegfried) is quite open. The area around the tubes wasn't really all that hot before, but with the coolers in place, things got extremely hot. I was using the coolers with the carbon sheath and a ring . . . I wonder if the carbon was acting as a blanket. Hmm.

All I know is that if I put a regular room fan to where it blows air around the Siegfried, the tubes cool off to the point where the bases are cool to the touch. I just can't help thinking that, for whatever reason and even though it doesn't make sense, these heat fins were actually making the tubes run hotter.

I've actually not had any trouble with microphonics in this amp, but I thought that perhaps tube coolers might extend the life of the tubes. Not that it even pushes the tubes all that hard, but hey. I suppose the enemy of good is better and I should have just left well enough alone!
