Thanks for the additional information. The VT series are cerrtainly different topologies than the D70/115/250 era of pure tube designs, but it's important to pin down when such a commonly made substitution is safe to do.

I am certainly interested to know the technical reasons the lack of a cathode follower causes problems with the KT-88 as compared to a 6550. KT-88s do make higher demands on the PS in a couple of parameters, but I'm curious as to why this would result in smoking or the "self destruct". If this is the case, ARC would be absolutely obliged to warn VT- owners about KT88s! Quite odd..
