That was "hot switiching", something to be avoided at all costs if possible. The pop was a huge transient caused by current inrush on tubes already drawing current, a powerful polarity reversal in the power transformer, and the reaction by the amps power supply to a sudden charge after an almost total discharge when the AC was interrupted, and then followed by a tremendous capacitor discharge to the tubes. Hot switching can blow a large portion of the cathode emulsion in the opt. tubes right off, and in rare cases will destroy amp components like power supply electrolytics. Look up "hot switching" on google for more accurate and deatiled info.
