Microphonic tubes can pick up music vibrations from your speakers, via either airborne or floor-borne propogation. This can blur, smear or distort the sound in various ways depending on mechanical resonances and severities. In extreme cases, even oscillation can occur. Guitar players witness this occasionally in tube amps at high volumes. So the tapping is merely a clue, and your sound reproduction might be better if you replaced the offending tube(s) and/or isolate the preamp chassis from vibration. Still, with almost any premamp, if you were to turn the gain all the way up with shorted inputs in a quiet room, and gently tap the phono stage tubes, you'll likely hear something (be careful, don't try this at home - you can take out your speakers this way if not careful!) Just to say that microphonics are never really totally eliminated. And transistors have been known to sing, too! But that's another story and much less of a problem.Brian
