I'd find something else to worry about. :-) What would concern me more is that when you attenuate the gain from the CD player you are introducing another volume control which is probably not (I'm just guessing) a really high quality one. The only advanage I could see in using the CD volume control that it might give you greater flexibility in fine tuning volume adjustments (smaller increments as you rotate the dial in most volume controls). If you can't really hear the difference I would opt for having greater flexibility in the main preamp.
