From one newbie to another, based on my experience with very similar Chinese manufactured integrated amps I would look at replacing the 12AU7’s and not bother with the KT88 tubes at this time. More than likely both the U7’s and the 88's are Chinese in origin. That would make them AL branded Shuguang Electronics produced tubes. http://www.shuguangelec.com/en/china/002/03.htmFrom everything I have read\been told the preamp tubes have the most impact on sound coloration. Since I have limited access to vast choices I tried some Russian made JJ tubes and saw a instant improvement. These tubes are low in cost and should be available just about anywhere. I did manage to locate some used vintage tubes and tried them out as well. Far better IMHO than the JJ’s but the cost for new ones is getting to the point where you could have more invested in the tubes than you do in the amp its self. Hence going the used tube route.
In closing swap out the 12AU7’s and find a brand you like at a price you can live with. When the KT88’s finally do burn out replace them with something else other than the Shuguang’s if you desire.
Take a look at the FAQ section in this forum and look for “Joe’s tube lore.†Good place to get a heads up on the U7’s.
Good luck
