The MC-30 hum balancer 'balances' the AC supplied to the filaments of the tubes thus reducing filament hum - supposingly. Since MC-30 does supply filament voltage to the preamp octal connector, it is true that the hum balancer affects the McIntosh preamp connected to it. But the MC-30 hum balancer also affect the tubes on MC30 itself too, so you should hear a difference when you adjust it.On my MC30s, if hum balancer is out of adjustment, I seem to start picking up them Halogen light dimmer noise. All the tubes I have on my MC30's have spiral filaments and won't pick up filament hum anyways. So may be we are hearing stray RFI picked up by filament circuitry or some such.
