What an amusing story and what a discovery! Given your description (i.e., the way the letters are etched on glass), it seems to me like it's a GE 12AU7. If it has a long, grey plate and a U-shaped getter, it is of the 1950's vintage. Not exactly a rare tube to write home about, but a decent tube for audio appications. Enjoy! M. N.
