For those of you with similar sentiments and common sense, thanks for your level headedness. The first post above attributes some "quotes" to me that are not mine. I did criticize Kevin Deal in a backhanded way when I first put up a post with positive comments on the tubes I purchased. I did not criticize Mr. Deal's allocation of tubes as a concept per se, I criticized Mr. Deal's decision to exclude past customers from the those "eligible" to buy his "private stash" tubes. The first rule of good business ("good business" being highly subjective and subject to debate) is don't disregard your previous customers. I had not only paid good money to Mr. Deal long before he was taking out full page displays in "Stereophile" but I also referred two friends to him who spent big dollars. Not an ounce of appreciation was shown when I came calling for replacement tubes to those I had purchased previously. Just "Sorry, if you don't buy a piece of hardware from me, you don't get those tubes".
I would like to say that generally, I agree that EBay is a horrible way to buy anything high-end audio related. Being a guy who likes collectible mechanical movement watches, the same thing can be said there-EBay is the last place one should look to for a nice watch. Too much risk for too little gain. Nothing beats a good reliable retailer or private seller. Galen Carrol Audio is the model for such. Unfortunately, I have never found a source for NOS tubes that reaches that level of courtesy, goodwill, frankness, fair-dealing, and reliability. The scarcity of NOS tubes along with the impossibility of tracking down provinence/past use and the general make-up of the folks drawn to collecting and trading NOS tubes seems to make it impossible. I imagine before too long digital front ends will incorporate pre-amp circuitry with enough sonic beauty/quality that I will be able to sell my beloved Audioprism Mantissa (on EBay, no doubt) and forget about the pain of buying good NOS tubes once and for all.
