Whether you need a matched set of tubes (valves) depends on the application. For example, some tube amps have independent bias adjustments for each power tube so although it might be nice to have a matched set, it may not be necessary. My Conrad-Johnson Premier 11a tube amp had a total of four 6550 power output tubes (two tubes per channel) and I would purchase a matched quad but in reality it wasn't necessary since this amp has a bias adjustment for each tube. Some amps REQUIRE a matched pair or matched quad (or more).
Another example, the ARC VT100 power amp uses 4 6550 power tubes PER channel for a total of 8 6550 power tubes. There is just ONE bias adjustment per channel (so one adjustment handles 4 tubes). In this case, it is adviseable to get a matched quad for EACH channel.
