Sylvania "JHS" gold labelling

209.178.188.124

Mates,

I recently received 4 more of a 12AT7 I really like- the triple mica, grey plate, square getter Sylvania 12AT7WA. This particular 12AT7 has a special depth and lushness while maintaining resolution that I never found in another model. These new ones were intended to match a pair of 1958 triple mica WA's, but the four new ones, instead of green marking, have very crisp- and (more permanent) gold lettering. These tubes have steel pins that nevertheless reflect a kind of coppery gold colour rather than the usual blue-ish tint. I don't think this is gold plating worn thin. The other distinctive feature is the "JHS" designation. The construction is clearly for a premium tube.

It occurred to me that my Sylvania 5751s -triple mica, black plate, square getter, steel pin are also "JHS" with this same gold printing. These are outstanding tubes also- clean and quiet.

What is the history of the "JHS" series? I thought this might be a military designation, but the 1958 'ATWAs are clearly marked as "USAF" - military- on the boxes, but do not have the gold printing. Is there a relationship of the JHS tubes to Sylvania "Gold Brand"?

Cheers,

Bambi B
