It does apppear someone converted to either diodes soldered on back of the socket or used an octal socket based plug-in solid-state convertor and shipped the tester without that adapter. The mercury vapor type 83 tube should have about a 20 volt drop across the tube. Solid-state has about 1 volt drop. This modification raises the testers B+ voltage and causes your tester to be out of factory calibration specifications. Replace the socket & install the 83 tube.
