I have an ARC LS16, which I've been told is one of ARC's more analytical preamps. Maybe, but with the right NOS tubes (Mullard and Telefunken seem to work well for me) the high end brightness is brought under very good control. If I were shopping, I would avoid the LS16 Mk II, and some of the newer ARC products because they use 6H30 tubes which can't be swapped out for some good old stuff.Other tweaks that have been very important for taming system brightness (mainly due to my Thiel speakers) have been Cardas cables and power cords and Shunyata power cords. The synergy thing on all of this stuff has been tricky, but with my bright Thiel speakers, bright LS16 and bright Wadia CD player, I have a surprisingly laid back system due to cables, tubes, and pc's.
I think that a good reason to go for tubes is the wonderful soundstaging and sense of atmosphere that they bring (even when very bright, as with Siemens tubes). One further comment that may offend some: I put a BAT Vk3i in my system and was quite underwhelmed by the sound.
