Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: 12AT7, 12AX7

The 12AX7 and 12AT7 are quite different animals and should not be interchanged.

The AX has a plate dissipation of 1.25 watts and an amplification factor of about 100. The AT has twice the plate dissipation (2.5 watts) and a typical amplification factor of 60.

The AT may be considered between the AU and the AX. The 12AU7 has an amplification factor of only about 18, and a slightly higher plate dissipation than the AT.

The ruggedized version of the 12AT7, with higher plate dissipation, is the 6201.

The fact that these tubes share common base connections encourages busy fingers to swap, but if the circuit is properly optimized for the chosen type, either of the other two will not work as well. In particular, an AX substituted for an AT or AU may poop out real fast. If the circuit is designed to take advantage of the greater power handling (plate dissipation) of the other types, the AX will run too hot and have a short life.

These are not "equivalent" tubes to be swapped according to which sounds best.
