Sean:I am amazed how similar some of your descriptions are to my own, even though my experiences are with musical instrument reinforcement and recording. This may be due the fact that we are both using hybrid systems (or the fact that I am new to this, too.) Could you please clarify a description for me... You state that the LPSs are bright, yet you also say that they are "plagued with a bit of softness." I guess in the later you are referring to the overall focus rather than the high end performance.
I have not tried an Amperex 12AX7 yet. Did you find the bass response of the Amperex more favorable overall because:
a. Improved clarity and focus;
b. Greater linearity in response (compared to the excess of Mids in the LPS);
c. Better low frequency extension.A side note:
I was a bit hesitant to try an Amperex because after trying a Brimar 12AX7 in my system, my response was: nice tube, very low noise floor, more focus and clarity than new production tubes, but it was too laid back for me... I was looking for something with a larger, slightly more upfront sound, which is why I went to LPSs (which work, but aren't the final chapter.) I can see how a Brimar would work very nicely in a home audio system (which will soon be my next vice...)Sincerely,
Tony M.
