Speakers do all of the mechanical work of converting the electrical signals to audible results. They will affect volume levels, soundstage, imaging, tonality, etc... more than any other component. While it is true that others will greatly effect the results along the way, knowing what you have to work with as a physical and electrical transducer will only help to narrow your search for suitable support components.After all, what good is it to find a great sounding amp but later find out that it will not drive the speakers that you'll be using ? Or a component that is bright sounding and might really aggravate your horns (and ears) ? Or components that all sound warm matched with bass heavy speakers ? No matter what signal is fed into them, the speakers will ALWAYS impart their sonic signature. They are the last link in the chain and have the final say so as to what you hear (and don't hear).
Work towards balancing the system, piece by piece. Just going out and buying an "electrically excellent" cd player with a "good" preamp and hooking that up to a "killer" power amp driving "monster" speakers has rarely resulted in a "musical" sounding system. Each piece has to complement the next in the chain and offset each others strengths and weaknesses. The system is only as good as the sum of it's parts working together. Sean
