Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
The Edichron 7DJ8 was going to be one of
my picks for the Golden Ear awards this year.
But, since I'm not a senior writer, here's my
Reader's Digest version of the scoop.Great tube! The first set I bought lasted about
six months in my unit, which runs every day for
at least six hours. Considering that ALL of the
other NOS Siemens, Amperex, etc., etc., 7308s and
6922s went tits-up anywhere between 10 hours and
10 days, these Edichrons are a real find! Of
course, they beat the holy heck out of the stock
Sovteks, and, best of all, can be found for $20 each.Sweeter highs, with ample air ... not quite as taut
lows, but waaaay better overall tonal balance. Finally,
the mids have the palpable palpaliscity that they should.
It's not hard to get improvements in timbral accuracy
when the reference is Sovtek (aka: solid-state under
glass), but the Edichrons held their own against the
best (albeit, short-lived) NOSs I've had the chance to try. When I spoke with Art a few weeks back about a
PS upgrade to my pre, he pitched a fit when he
heard I was running these tubes. "The voltage is
all wrong," he practically screamed. I could sense
the tension in his face and the sweat running down
his face. When I sent the unit to him, I included these tubes.
He called yesterday to tell me that run great. The
lust in his tone was as palpable as the mids described
earlier. Is the AIM3A the world's best pre-amp? Of course not!
Is it one of the best? Probably, especially when you
consider the few full-function units available. How much
better is it with the Edichrons? Let's just say that I
won't divulge the name of my supplier. ;-)æ
P.S. Things get even better when the pre (or cd/dac or
amp or TT) get set on Rosinante's DarkMatter base.
More on that later.
